Alara Bulur

In Prologue, the artist confronts the divide between the present and past lives of her immigrant parents. The prints are based on family photographs depicting places she has never visited, people she has never met, and versions of her parents she will never get to know—one big story with only a few surviving pages.

Past lives are recorded and revealed to us in small fragments. What remains is only a fraction of what transpired, and the difference between who we know our parents to be and who they once were remains unclear. Herein lies the question that the artist seeks to answer for herself, and that Prologue asks of the viewer: Who were your parents before you?
