Artist statement
I create collections of relief prints. My collections
vary in concept, colour, and overall design, allowing me
to explore different aesthetics and ideas while
experimenting with my personal style.
I pull inspiration from what I observe around me—for
example, people and nature—or from my imagination to
develop my collections, using my own photographs and
sketches as references. Some of my works are meant to
tell a story and engage the viewer on an emotional
level. Others are made with no intent of conveying a
deeper meaning, serving instead as playful studies of
texture, colour, and form.
With or without an underlying message, every piece
stands out—a feat I accomplish through simple,
high-contrast design and a continual effort to depict my
subjects in a new and exciting way.
Artist bio
Alara Bulur is a self-taught artist based in the GTA.
She specializes in relief printmaking and has been
producing work in this medium since 2024.
Alara was first introduced to printmaking through a fine
arts elective at the University of Waterloo, where she
majored in Computer Science. Since graduating in 2025,
her practice has continued to evolve, and she now
pursues art full-time.
On craftsmanship
Each print within an edition is a bit different. Small
flaws and imperfections (variations in texture, colour,
etc.) that appear during the printmaking process are
welcome reminders that each work is made by a person,
not a machine.
Please also note that:
- All works are 8x10 in (15x20 cm).
- All works are hand-carved.
- All works are hand-pressed.
